Cancun is the ideal destination for all ages and lifestyles. There is endless nightlife in the hotel zone as well as a multitude of different water sports to try out for the young at heart. Scuba diving is a popular activity for many. To find out more, click here to find an article called “Scuba Holidays”, .
For those who are interested in culture, just a short distance away are the ancient ruins of Chichén Itzá to inspire you with the history of Mexican culture. For families with young children, there are child activity day time clubs to keep them entertained.
Plaza Las Americas will make you think that you've stepped into a modern shopping mall in your hometown. Two of the only true American department stores in Cancun are Sears and JC Penny, as well as a variety of specialty shops, like “Liverpool”, not “The World in One City, U.K.” but the store, called “Liverpool”. Check it out, you will be amazed at the selection of clothes, electrical products, household products and food, with a definite Mexican flavour! Try the European store called C&A. You’ll find amazing fashions for all ages under their own “Clockhouse” brand. Other brand names diehard shoppers will recognize are Sony, Radio Shack, and Guess. Of course, what trip to the mall would be complete without fast food and a movie? Plaza Las Americas can satisfy these tastes with Burger King, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and 18 screens in two movie theatres.
Once a small, unremarkable fishing village, the resort of Cancun is today the reason most people visit Mexico. It is made up of two parts: the glitzy hotel zone dedicated to tourism, and the downtown area inhabited by the permanent residents. You will find a noticeably different atmosphere in each, the dramatic contrast between the air-conditioned shopping malls, chic restaurant dining, and wealthy pleasure-seeking tourists in one; and the bustling market street stalls, noisy vendors, and the daily grind of people at work in the other. The hotel zone, situated on a thin strip of land (Isla Cancun) in the shape of a figure '7', is what people imagine when they talk about Cancun. It is a vision of Caribbean paradise with soft white sand beaches and clear blue-green waters. The city is also a good base from which to explore some of the nearby attractions, particularly the ancient Mayan site of Chichén Itzá on the mainland, which is the best restored and most famous of the archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula.
At nearby Playa Del Carmen, you can shop your heart away long 5th Avenue and pick up your pseudo designer goods at bargain prices – no one will know the difference back home.
Chichén Itzá, Mexico
The Mayan people are most well known for their advanced knowledge and brilliance regarding astrology, as well as for their incredible resilience. The stone remnants of their civilisation can be found spread throughout Mexico and Central America. Chichén Itzá, with its famous pyramids and temples, is the Yucatán's most visited ancient Mayan site. The main attraction is the Pyramid of Kukulkán (the plumed serpent god), or El Castillo, a grand pyramid topped by a temple that dominates the site.
