United Airlines Will Now Send Real-Time Weather Radar Texts to Customers

During weather delays, United Airlines is now texting links to local, real-time radar maps to its passengers.

United is officially the first airline to text its passengers real-time weather maps during delays, even though texting updates to gates and departure schedules has become standard in the travel business.

The maps, which can be found under "flight status" on the United app, will also display weather information across flight paths and illustrate how weather in one area of the nation may affect flights in other areas.

Although there is little that passengers can do to control the weather, it is hoped that this information will help them stay informed and make any adjustments to their plans.

Just before the July 4 holiday, which is anticipated to be one of the busiest travel weeks of the year for many Americans, there is an update. For its part, United anticipates more than five million travelers between June 28 and July 8, an increase of more than 7% from the previous year.

According to United's Chief Information Officer Jason Birnbaum, "texting was the simplest way to stay connected to real-time information about their flight at a time when more people are traveling than ever this summer."

"We can provide more people with even more up-to-date information about their flight by fusing people power with cutting-edge technology-enabled tools, as we know customers value transparency."
