Sea days are part of nearly every cruise itinerary. For some passengers, they’re the highlight — a day to relax in the sun or jump from activity to activity. Others worry about boredom or feeling confined. Whatever your style, here are ten things to avoid when you have a full day at sea.
1. Ignoring the Daily Newsletter
The newsletter delivered to your cabin each evening is your guide to the next day’s activities, dining times, events, and special offers. Skip it and you could miss out on unique opportunities.
2. Overloading Your Schedule
Trying to fill every hour with activities can leave you exhausted. Save time for slower moments like a leisurely lunch, soaking in the hot tub, or reading on your balcony.
3. Missing Special Sea Day Events
Sea days often feature one-time activities such as brunches, behind-the-scenes tours, or matinee shows. Prioritize these over things available every day like the pool or water slides.
4. Limiting Yourself to the Buffet
Buffets can be crowded on sea days. Take advantage of the ship’s restaurants for a more relaxed breakfast or lunch. Without a port call, you can enjoy a slower, quieter meal.
5. Hogging Poolside Lounge Chairs
Reserving chairs for long periods without using them is poor etiquette. It’s fine to save your spot for a short swim or snack, but give it up if you’ll be gone more than 30 minutes.
6. Visiting the Spa or Gym at Peak Times
Sea day mornings and late afternoons are the busiest. Book spa treatments in advance and visit during off-peak hours such as mealtimes or early morning for a more peaceful experience.
7. Starting to Drink Too Early
Pacing is key. Begin drinking too early and you risk sunburn, missing dinner, or forgetting the day entirely. Spread out your drinks to keep the evening enjoyable.
8. Staying Indoors All Day
Don’t miss the sea breeze and ocean views. Even if you have indoor plans, take a break to step outside and enjoy the scenery.
9. Sleeping the Day Away
Rest is important, but don’t spend the entire day in bed. Set an alarm so you can enjoy at least some of the ship’s activities and atmosphere.
10. Overspending
Sea days can be tempting with casino games, shopping events, and spa specials. Keep your budget in mind and avoid unplanned splurges that could lead to regret later.
