Hawaii to Implement New ‘Green Tax’ Starting 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, the state of Hawaii will introduce a new environmental initiative aimed at supporting climate change mitigation and sustainable tourism. A “Green Fee” will be added to Hawaii’s existing lodging tax, making it the first U.S. state to implement a climate impact fee specifically for tourists.

Key details include:

  • Green Fee Amount: A 0.75% increase will be added to the current transient accommodations tax, bringing the total lodging tax to 11% per night.

  • Applies To: All hotel guests, short-term vacation rentals, and for the first time, cruise ship passengers staying overnight in Hawaii.

  • Purpose: Revenue from the Green Fee—estimated to generate up to $100 million annually—will be used to fund climate resiliency projects, environmental stewardship, and sustainable tourism initiatives throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

  • Next Steps: Specific projects and programs supported by the Green Fee will be detailed during Hawaii’s next legislative session.

This fee is part of Hawaii’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability. Rainbow Travel Inc. encourages all clients planning future trips to Hawaii to be aware of this upcoming change and plan accordingly.
