Starting Wednesday, January 8, 2025, all U.S. and Canadian travelers must apply for and obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to the United Kingdom. This new rule, one of many travel updates introduced this year, could disrupt plans for those unaware of the requirement.
The ETA applies to all travelers, regardless of the length or purpose of their visit, including those transiting through a U.K. airport. The only exceptions are British and Irish citizens.
Part of an initiative to modernize immigration and strengthen border security, the U.K.’s ETA requires travelers to apply via the official U.K. government website or the U.K. ETA app (available on iOS and Google). The application process involves submitting a photo, personal and passport details, and a £10 fee.
To simplify the process, families and groups can have one individual apply on behalf of everyone. The U.K. government promises a “simple and fast” application experience, with decisions typically issued within three working days or sooner. However, in the event of a denial, travelers will need to apply for a standard visa.
While most applications are processed within three working days, some may take longer. Travelers are encouraged to apply early to avoid disruptions.
For frequent visitors to the U.K., an approved ETA remains valid for at least two years, allowing unlimited trips during that period.
