New York's Times Square Edition hotel will reopen in June

New York's Times Square Edition hotel, which was once expected to shutter permanently, is now scheduled to reopen on June 1.

Its sister property, the New York Edition hotel in Manhattan's NoMad district, has already reopened and is welcoming back guests starting May 11.

New York was hit hard at the beginning of the pandemic, as museums, Broadway, restaurants and hotels shuttered and tourists and residents alike fled what was then the epicenter of the Covid crisis in the U.S. Hotel occupancy for a week in March 2020 was around 14.%, according to STR data. But recently the city has been marking a marked comeback in terms of occupancy and attractions. It is set to roll out $30 million tourism marketing campaign in June, and in another sign of confidence, the storied Plaza Hotel, managed by Fairmont, is reopening this month.

The 452-room Times Square Edition, which opened to much fanfare in 2019, said last May that it planned to cease operating around mid-August. Later on in the year, however, Marriott International CFO Leeny Oberg told investors that the property's lenders had "stepped in," leaving the door open to a reopening.

Upon its reopening, the Times Square Edition will resume operations at its Terrace and Garden restaurant and Lobby Bar. The hotel's 701 West restaurant and Paradise Club nightlife and entertainment venue are set to reopen at a later date.

The 271-room New York Edition, meanwhile, which made its debut in 2015, has concurrently unveiled two new one-bedroom suite accommodations, both of which offer floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Madison Square Park. The property's Lobby Bar venue is now offering all-day dining, while its Michelin-starred Clocktower restaurant is on track to reopen sometime this summer.

Born out of a collaboration between hospitality veteran Ian Schrager and Marriott International, the Edition brand launched in 2007 and has 11 properties worldwide. Marriott said last December that it plans to expand the luxury lifestyle flag with seven additional properties this year.
