Norway Tourism Surges as World Cup Success Sparks New Travel Interest

Norway’s impressive run at the FIFA World Cup has created a major boost in interest for the destination, with Canadian travelers showing particularly strong interest in visiting the country.

Hurtigruten reported that online searches for Norway increased by more than 1,000% during the tournament. The cruise company also saw significant increases in website traffic and bookings, particularly around Norway’s Round of 16 victory over Brazil and its quarterfinal match against England.

Canadian Interest Soars

Canadian travelers were among the most engaged audiences during the World Cup.

Hurtigruten recorded a 102% increase in Canadian website traffic and a 110% increase in online bookings from Canada during the tournament.

The surge comes on top of an already strong growth trend in interest and bookings for Norway. The destination had been gaining popularity even before the World Cup, helped in part by its appearance in major films and television productions.

Movies and series such as Succession, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Dune, and No Time to Die have showcased Norway’s dramatic scenery to international audiences.

From Sports to Travel Inspiration

Norway’s World Cup success introduced many travelers to the country’s culture, scenery, and distinctive traditions.

The viral popularity of the Norwegian team’s Viking Row celebration also helped generate international attention. Hurtigruten joined the trend by sharing videos of its crew performing the celebration aboard its ships, generating nearly two million organic social media impressions.

The increased exposure is expected to have a lasting effect, with Norway moving higher on the travel wish lists of many potential visitors.

Norway Fits the “Coolcation” Trend

Norway’s growing popularity also reflects broader travel trends, including coolcations and slower, more immersive vacations.

Travelers looking to escape hot and crowded destinations are increasingly interested in cooler climates, dramatic landscapes, and experiences that allow them to spend more time exploring a single region.

Norway offers a combination of fjords, mountains, coastal communities, wildlife, culture, and outdoor adventures, making it suitable for a wide range of travelers.

Activities range from dogsledding and snowshoeing to scenic coach tours, fjord excursions, and other soft-adventure experiences.

Hurtigruten Offers Two Distinct Cruise Experiences

Travel advisors can consider two different Hurtigruten products when planning a Norway vacation.

The Original Coastal Express dates back to 1893 and continues to connect communities along Norway’s rugged coastline. The route provides travelers with an opportunity to experience coastal Norway while visiting many of the same ports that have been part of the service for more than a century.

Signature Voyages offer a more traditional premium, all-inclusive cruise experience, with fewer port calls and longer stays.

Food is also an important part of the experience, with Hurtigruten’s Norway’s Coastal Kitchen program focusing on locally sourced ingredients picked up along the coast and served onboard.

Strong Outlook for Norway Travel

Hurtigruten expects demand for Norway to remain strong, particularly as interest in shoulder-season travel continues to grow.

The company has expanded its Signature fleet, increased departures on its Svalbard Line, and plans to introduce new itineraries, including the Inner Fjords Explorer in 2027 and the Arctic Circle Explorer in early 2028.

Canada remains an important market, with Canadian interest growing significantly during the World Cup.

For travelers looking for a smaller-ship experience focused on scenery, culture, local cuisine, and exploration, Norway is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to traditional Mediterranean cruises.
