Ten of the most breathtaking beaches in Comino, Gozo, and Malta

Malta is a hotspot in every sense of the word, nestled in the Mediterranean Sea underneath Sicily.

1. Golden Bay

Best beach for soft sand

There are a few hidden treasures among the few large sandy beaches in Malta and Gozo. Perhaps the most picturesque is Golden Bay, a broad stretch of orange-gold sand that gently dips into the dark-blue Mediterranean on Malta's northwest coast. You can lay down on the softest sand on the island, consider the available boat cruises and water activities, or browse the menus of neighboring eateries with a view of the bay.

Planning tip: Golden Bay is a great choice if you're traveling with little children and strollers because it has convenient entry points.

2. Mellieħa Bay

Best beach for water sports

In Malta, a watersports provider is always nearby. One of the greatest places to goof around on the sea is Mellieħa Bay, where you can windsurf, kitesurf, waterski, canoe, banana boat, and parasail. This is the biggest sandy beach in Malta, and it's perfect for wind-based water sports because of its consistent northeasterly breeze. Other excellent options for water sports are Golden Bay, Marsalforn, and Xlendi.

Planning tip: Mellieħa is a well-liked beach for both locals and tourists due to the variety of amenities and activities it offers. If you are seeking a peaceful corner in a quiet area, this is not the place to go.

3. Blue Lagoon

Best beach for swimming

Comino's Blue Lagoon wins the title of Malta's best swimming location, defeating a number of formidable competitors. The island's calm and protected inland sea is a paradise for swimming, surrounded by cliffs and framed by a brilliant white beach.

A few hundred people will be enjoying the pool with you during peak season because the Blue Lagoon is undoubtedly well-known. Taking a boat tour here in the afternoon, after most people have left for the day, is a better way to avoid the crowds.

4. Fomm ir-Riħ

Best beach for peace and quiet

The "mouth of the wind" (Fomm ir-Riħ) is the most isolated beach in Malta. From the small town of Baħrija on the northwest Maltese coast, there is a steep and occasionally difficult trail that descends to it. Nonetheless, there are benefits to such difficulty, and this is the beach for you if you want solitude, crystal-clear water, and breathtaking views of the coast.

Planning tip: If the scramble doesn't appeal to you, you may always arrive by boat. The trek down takes around 20 minutes.

5. Wied il-Għasri

Best place for snorkeling

Malta is an undersea paradise, so beware, snorkelers. Wied il-Għasri is a coastal cleft on the Gozo coast that forms a short river of seawater that ends in a small beach with sand and shingle. A staircase carved into the rock leads to the seashore. Although it is best avoided in inclement weather, diving into the channel offers some of Malta's best snorkeling.

Detour: The natural sea pool of Għar Lapsi and the rocky entrance of Mgarr ix-Xini are two more excellent snorkeling locations. There are many diving centers if scuba diving is more your style; the Blue Hole, which is close to Dwejra Bay in Gozo, is a well-liked diving location.

6. Għajn Tuffieħa

Best beach for sunbathing

Għajn Tuffieħa is a more sedate option for sun worship, but it shares the same beautiful view and fine, silky, butterscotch-colored sand as the well-known Golden Bay. The slightly longer walk to get there also helps to disperse the crowds, and unlike Golden Bay, it is not supported by hotels. This is a great option if all you want to do is relax in the sun and occasionally cool off in the sea.

7. Ramla Bay

Best beach for families

A restaurant that rents out loungers and umbrellas backs the terracotta-colored dunes of Ramla Bay in Gozo, which is easily accessible by bus and automobile. There is a struggle up to Calypso's Cave to see if anyone is growing bored, the beach falls gently into the ocean, and the views across the hills are beautiful. While Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, and Paradise Bay are other deserving candidates for the title, Ramla Bay is one of Malta's greatest family beaches.

8. Mġarr ix-Xini

Best beach for lunch

Gozo's Mġarr ix-Xini (Port of the Galleys), which is accessible via a winding, narrow road, was formerly the principal harbor for the Knights of St John on the island. Today, the pebbled beach of the rocky bay is home to what may be Malta's most relaxed beachside restaurant. Although the 10-table Rew Rew's service can occasionally be a bit too laid back, the experience is still worth it because of the abundance of seafood on the lunch plates, including some delicious calamari, salad, and homemade potato chips.

Planning tip: Charter a boat from Xlendi or Mġarr harbor to go along the coast, or try to visit during the week to have a chance of getting a spot in the nearby parking lot.

9. St Peter’s Pool and Il-Kalanka Bay

Best natural swimming pools

One of Malta's most picturesque summertime attractions are the sea-sculpted natural swimming pools made of coastal rock. One of the most beautiful is St. Peter's Pool, which is on the southeast coast. It's a ladle-shaped scoop out of the rock that creates a protected lagoon where you may swim and then bask like a seal on the nearby rocks.

Detour: The bathing hole at Il-Kalanka Bay is nearby and typically more quieter. Take particular caution because the platform for jumping into the water at Il-Kalanka is higher than at St. Peter's.

10. Għar Lapsi

Best place to leap into the sea

Għar Lapsi, a rocky inlet at the foot of Malta's Dingli Cliffs, is particularly noteworthy. It is well-liked by divers and snorkelers, as well as kids who enjoy jumping off rocks into the ocean. Another great place for a laid-back supper is Carmen's Bar & Restaurant, which has stunning views of the rocky cove at Għar Lapsi.
