Authorities in Cancun, Mexico, have eliminated a contentious regulation that had been causing problems for gullible travelers visiting the well-known resort city.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama declared in a Facebook video on Friday that travelers arriving at Cancun International Airport won't be assessed an additional cost if they bring more than one larger electronic item, such as a laptop or tablet.

The change takes effect right away.

"We managed to eliminate the charge for bringing more than one computer or electronic tablet into your personal luggage, within the Cancun International Airport, with the support of Mexican Customs," Lezama wrote on her Facebook page.

"I am here to inform you that as a result of various uncomfortable and inconvenient situations detected at customs in the Cancun International Airport which have affected our destination's image such as not allowing international and domestic tourists, as well as residents, to bring more than one device be it computer, laptop or tablet, we visited the area and reviewed the criteria used to allow tourists through customs and thanks to the support and consideration of the Agencia Nacional de Aduanas de México (National Customs Agency of Mexico), we reviewed the procedure to reactivate the tourists flow through customs and eliminate this criteria."

"After our roundtable conference with the Agencia Nacional de Aduanas de México, and with their help, the decision was made to remove the existing criteria. This was a long-standing franchise rule that is out of date with today's home office, technological advancements, and the important tourism industry that travels to our location for professional meetings, seminars, and conventions," Lezama continued.

"We are thankful to the authorities for their sensibility and for listening with the goal to adapt to this new era, and beginning today, this charge has been eliminated for both National and International travelers."

There have been recent allegations circulating that travelers who bring many larger electronic gadgets on their trip are charged $190 on average.

Items that the owners were unable or unwilling to pay the levy have been seized by customs officers.

The president of Elite Travel Group, Tammy Levent, has expressed her displeasure with the rule in public and even scheduled a meeting to voice her concerns. She did this earlier this year.

She feels that these improvements are much appreciated by Cancun visitors because of her assistance.
