When Is the Best Time to Travel to Switzerland?

Writer: Rainbow Travel incRainbow Travel inc

The ideal time to visit Switzerland is whenever you're daydreaming about sophisticated cities, shimmering lakes, and lush mountain valleys. You should visit Switzerland as soon as possible if you feel like taking a summertime plunge in Lake Geneva or curling up with a supper of everything coated in raclette in the winter. What you hope to gain from your vacation will determine the specific mechanics of when to visit this landlocked European nation with centuries-old culture and commerce.

I spoke with Tara Koehler of Royal Travel, one of Condé Nast Traveler's Top Travel Specialists, who specializes in Switzerland, to get the inside scoop on the ideal time to visit the country. Here, she breaks down the best times to go, how long to stay, and what to do while in this intriguing place.

What time of year is ideal for traveling to Switzerland?

The ideal time to visit Switzerland, like any other place, depends on your post-trip plans. "I can give an argument for almost every month of the year being the best time to visit," Koehler adds, referring to the nation's cities, villages, mountains, lakes, and other natural features.

Travel in January and February to see Switzerland's cities, such as Geneva and Zurich, without the crowds. "There aren't many people around, and cafes still have comfortable outdoor areas with blankets, heat lamps, and the well-known Swiss Glühwein to keep you warm," Koehler explains. Crowds will obviously increase throughout the festive season in December, but you will surely be cheered by the lively atmosphere of the quaint Swiss Christmas markets.

The greatest time to visit Switzerland for skiing would be during the entire winter. "It may surprise you to learn that skiing in Switzerland is not very expensive," Koehler explains. "In addition to providing other fantastic ski deals, many Swiss towns allow children to ski for free, and lift prices frequently outperform those in Colorado and Utah."

The music is much better in the summer, when the weather is wonderful and mild. Koehler strongly recommends the Montreux Jazz Festival, which takes place in the resort town of Montreux (about 30 minutes east of Lausanne by car or train) during the first two weeks of July. “The festival is iconic and lights up Lake Geneva, bringing the Swiss Riviera front and center for these two special weeks each year,” Koehler says.

What time of year is the most affordable to travel to Switzerland?

According to Koehler, the months of January, February, and March usually offer the cheapest flights from the US to Switzerland. However, keep in mind that these months are still regarded as peak season in ski communities. "This is also when you'll get some great hotel deals all over the country," she notes. Therefore, if you're on a tight budget and are visiting in the winter, you might forego St. Moritz and Zermatt in favor of Geneva or Zurich, where there will be more alternatives for hotels and restaurants of all price ranges.

When is Switzerland's busiest time of year?

Since most of the continent and the Northern Hemisphere travel during the summer, June, July, and August are the busiest travel months in Switzerland. During these months, costs are typically higher and crowds are typically larger. "Some contend that May and September are now also regarded as peak seasons in Switzerland," Koehler continues. However, May and September continue to have lower crowds. Additionally, December through March is undoubtedly the busiest time of year for ski communities.

Where should I go if this is my first time in Switzerland?

The greatest places to travel into are Geneva and Zurich, both of which have airports that are often connected to other international centers by airlines such as Swiss Air and Lufthansa. With so many hotels, dining options, and activities, either or both cities are excellent starting points for first-time tourists.

"Lucerne is a top destination; it's not far from Zurich Airport and it has so much to offer, since it's situated on a beautiful lake with mountain activities available within 30 minutes of town," adds Koehler. Additionally, there is the Italian-speaking city of Lugano in the southern region of the country, which is only two and a half hours from Zurich, and the tourist town of Montreux on Lake Geneva. According to Koehler, "all of these cities have their own unique personalities, exude Swiss charm, and provide both lake and mountain activities and views."

For a first-time visitor, how many days must I stay in Switzerland?

A week to nine nights would be ideal for a more thorough visit, according to Koehler, but three or so nights in a Swiss location can be plenty. "This will allow you to visit lakes and mountains and get to see at least three to four different cities and regions," he says. I would make an effort to include stops in the regions of the nation where people speak Italian, French, and German. Of course, you have even more reasons to visit Switzerland again and again if time or finances do not allow for a longer, more comprehensive stay.

Is there anything else I should know before going to Switzerland?

Respecting the social and cultural customs of the place you're visiting is a part of being a responsible traveler. "The Swiss are quiet people, so remember: Don't be loud on public transportation or in restaurants," Koehler says. In the same vein, you should arrive on time and make your bookings; you don't want to arrive too late and discover that, in a sense, you have no space at the inn. When using public transit, such as trains, to travel across the nation, Koehler advises arriving at the station a little early to avoid being left behind. "Trains and buses run on time, pretty much always," he adds.
