Flying economy doesn’t mean missing out on special perks. In fact, many airlines still offer a few great extras—you just have to know when and how to ask. At Rainbow Travel, we believe in making every travel experience better, so we’ve gathered some of the best free things you can still enjoy on board, even when flying economy.
1. Complimentary Meals and Snacks
Many international airlines offer full meals in economy class. For example, Emirates serves trays that include a hot entrée, salad or fruit, cheese and crackers, and dessert. Japan Airlines offers their fun instant noodles called “Udon de Sky,” while Air France serves French-style meals with cheese and dessert. Lufthansa also provides generous three-course meals.
On domestic flights, you might not get a full meal, but some airlines still offer great snacks. Delta and JetBlue provide popular treats like Cheez-Its, Goldfish, granola bars, and the much-loved Biscoff cookies.
2. Amenity Kits
Long-haul flights on certain airlines come with mini amenity kits. These often include items like a toothbrush, eye mask, socks, or even moisturizer and lip balm. Emirates and Turkish Airlines are known for these thoughtful touches. Other airlines such as Qatar Airways, Etihad, Singapore Airlines, and ANA also offer amenity kits to economy passengers on longer flights.
3. Free Wi-Fi
Staying connected in the air is becoming easier. Airlines like JetBlue and Delta already offer free Wi-Fi, and American Airlines plans to do the same starting in early 2026. Some international carriers, including Emirates, Air France, and Qatar Airways, also provide complimentary Wi-Fi. Often, you’ll need to sign up for a free frequent flyer account to access it.
4. Pillows and Blankets
If you're on a longer flight, especially overnight, airlines may provide pillows and blankets to help you get comfortable. These items are often available on request, especially once the main cabin service is complete. For example, Air Canada offers pillows and blankets on many international routes. A kind and polite request to a flight attendant can go a long way in receiving these cozy extras.
5. Alcoholic Beverages
Many international airlines still serve free alcoholic drinks in economy. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines provide beer, wine, and spirits. Lufthansa and KLM also offer complimentary drinks. Korean Air features wines selected by a top sommelier, and Air France offers wine and Champagne chosen by their in-house wine expert. These small touches can make your trip feel extra special.
6. Activity Kits for Kids
Traveling with children? Some airlines give out free activity kits with coloring books, crayons, and toys. Air Canada, Air France, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, United, and Qantas are among the airlines that offer kid-friendly packs in all cabins. Some even hand out pilot wings or small plush toys if you ask. Cathay Pacific, for example, provides take-home gifts for younger passengers between ages three and six.
7. Airline Trading Cards
Delta offers unique trading cards that feature different aircraft from its fleet. These fun collectibles are often handed out by pilots when they’re available. Flight attendants can let you know the best time to ask. United and Frontier also have similar trading card programs, which have become popular among frequent flyers and young travelers alike.
