Air Canada Braces for Potential Pilot Strike: Flexibility and Fee Waivers for Travelers

As Air Canada gears up for a potential pilot strike set to begin on September 17, the airline is taking proactive steps to ensure passengers can adjust their travel plans with ease. While the carrier believes there’s still ample time to resolve the ongoing issues with its pilots, it is preparing for the worst-case scenario by introducing a new “goodwill rebooking policy.”

What’s the Goodwill Rebooking Policy?

Understanding that travelers value certainty, Air Canada has rolled out a flexible rebooking policy for anyone flying between September 15 and 23. This policy is designed to alleviate stress and offer peace of mind in case of disruptions. Here’s a breakdown of what it entails:

  • No Change Fees: If you booked your travel by August 27, you can make changes to your flight at no additional cost. This applies to all Air Canada-operated flights, including those by Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express (operated by Jazz or PAL Airlines), and Air Canada Vacations (note: additional fees may apply for hotels).

  • Options for Rebooking or Cancellation:

    • Rebook: You can change your flight to any other Air Canada flight with the same origin and destination up to November 30, 2024. Change fees and fare differences are waived, allowing you to switch flights at no extra charge if you stay on the same route and cabin.

    • Cancel for Credit: If you prefer, you can cancel your flight and retain the residual value as a future travel credit. Refunds are available for refundable tickets, but non-refundable tickets will not be refunded as flights are expected to operate normally.

    • Post-November 30 Travel: If you need to rebook for a date after November 30, change fees will be waived, though you will need to pay any fare differences.

During this period, certain special services will be temporarily unavailable. This includes the Unaccompanied Minor Program, special baggage services for items like bicycles and hunting equipment, and the Meet and Assist Program in Japan. If you booked through Air Canada Vacations, contact the tour operator directly for assistance.

Air Canada is committed to keeping passengers informed. They will notify travelers of any changes to their flight itinerary in advance. For more details, visit the airline’s action page and the Air Canada Vacations travel advisories.

As negotiations continue, Air Canada reports “significant progress” and remains dedicated to reaching an agreement before the potential strike date. Stay tuned for updates and plan accordingly to make the most of this flexible rebooking policy.
