Just in time for the busy holiday travel season, Alberta’s two major airports are rolling out major security upgrades.
Calgary International Airport (YYC)
YYC is consolidating its domestic security screening from checkpoints A, B, and C into one central location. This new hub features updated scanning technology that lets passengers keep aerosols, liquids, gels, and large electronics in their carry-on bags during screening—similar to what’s already used for international and U.S. preclearance areas.
According to Calgary Airports COO Chris Miles, the $50-million project is a long-term investment designed to make screening faster and more efficient. Once fully implemented, the new system is expected to move passengers through security 30–50% faster, reducing confusion and stress about what needs to be removed from bags.
The rollout is happening in stages. Phase one launches, Dec. 10, 2025, adding seven new lanes and increasing capacity by 40%. A second phase will add two more lanes, with the option to expand to 13 lanes in total. The airport expects a record 1.48 million travellers this December.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG)
Edmonton is also introducing new CT X-ray scanners that allow security officers to view baggage contents in detailed 3D without manual bag checks. This speeds up screening and allows passengers to keep liquids and laptops in their carry-ons.
During peak December travel days, YEG expects up to 28,000 passengers daily. The new CT scanners will be gradually installed at the domestic checkpoint alongside older units, and eventually added to the transborder area as well.
Travellers are reminded that liquids must still be under 100 mL in carry-on bags, regardless of scanner technology.
