Vancouver Ranked Among the World’s Most ‘Grandparent-Friendly’ Cities

Vancouver has been recognized as one of the world’s most “grandparent-friendly” cities, according to a global study examining destinations that are particularly suitable for travelers over the age of 70.

The ranking, conducted by AllClear Travel Insurance, analyzed 175 cities worldwide and evaluated them based on factors that are important to older adults when traveling.

Several criteria were used to determine the rankings, including:

  • Walkability, measured through elevation changes and overall terrain

  • Crime and safety statistics

  • Healthcare access and quality

  • Noise and light pollution levels

  • Quality of green spaces

  • Cultural accessibility, including the number of museums, theatres, and attractions

  • Mean annual temperature

  • Availability of accessible hotels

Vancouver was the only Canadian city to appear among the top-scoring destinations, ranking 19th overall with a score of 59.3.

The West Coast city performed particularly well in categories such as accessible accommodations and walkability, thanks to its well-developed urban infrastructure and easy access to parks, waterfront paths, and cultural attractions. However, the city received lower marks in areas such as climate comfort and quietness, reflecting its rainy weather and busy urban environment.

The top spot globally went to Valencia, which achieved an overall score of 74.2. The Spanish coastal city was praised for its abundance of attractions, coastal scenery, flat terrain, plentiful green spaces, and warm Mediterranean climate, all factors that make it particularly appealing for older travelers.

The study highlights how cities that combine easy mobility, safety, healthcare access, and cultural offerings tend to perform best for older travelers looking for comfortable and enriching destinations. 🌍✈️
