Why Checking in Online Matters

ree

Most airlines allow online check-in starting 24 hours before departure, and there are several benefits to doing it early:

  • Better Seat Selection: If you didn’t choose a seat when booking, early check-in increases your chances of getting a window or aisle seat instead of a middle one. Some airlines only allow seat selection at check-in, especially on international itineraries.

  • Avoid Being Bumped: Airlines sometimes oversell flights. If a flight is full, passengers who checked in last may be more likely to be bumped.

  • Baggage Timing Rules:

    • Domestic flights: Checked bags must be dropped off at least 60 minutes before departure.

    • International flights: Baggage must be checked in at least 90 minutes before departure.

    • Some airports have even stricter cutoff times, so check your specific airport and airline guidelines.

  • Faster Airport Process: Early check-in means you can head straight to security if you’re not checking a bag.

  • Upgrade Opportunities: If your airline offers upgrades at check-in, the earlier you request, the better your chances.

  • Overhead Bin Space: On airlines with open seating, earlier check-in means earlier boarding and better access to overhead bin space.

  • Auto Check-in Options: Some airlines offer automatic check-in to save time and secure better boarding positions.

  • Use of Kiosks & Curbside: If you must check in at the airport, look for self-serve kiosks or curbside check-in to avoid long lines.

Reminder: Online check-in doesn’t replace airport arrival time. Most airlines recommend arriving at least 2 hours early for domestic and 3 hours for international flights.
